Phoenix Open Betting Preview

Hideki Matsuyama travels to TPC Scottsdale for this year’s Phoenix Open looking to bag the PGA Tour’s first three-peat in seven seasons.

Matsuyama is joint favourite to take the title, which gets under way on February 1, with the world no.5 at 9-1 with Betway. He shares those same odds with world no.2 Jon Rahm and world no.3 Jordan Spieth.
The Phoenix Open line-up includes reigning FedExCup champion Justin Thomas, current leader Patton Kizzire, while three-time Phoenix Open champion Phil Mickelson is back for his 29th appearance at the event.

The veteran left-hander, who hold the joint 72-hole course record, is likely to prove popular with punters at 50-1, Kizzire can be found at the same odds, and Thomas represents good value at 14-1.

Matsuyama is aiming to be the first golfer to go back-to-back-to-back at the same venue since Steve Stricker won three straight John Deere Classics between 2009-11.

Stricker will be teeing it up for his first PGA Tour start since last year’s FedExCup playoff opener and is an outsider at 150-1, but is worth a look each way, after he guided the US Presidents Cup squad to victory last September.

16Last year, Matsuyama secured the title via a play-off for the second-consecutive year, getting the better of Webb Simpson thanks to a breath-taking 10-foot birdie. Simpson is priced at 40-1 to win this year’s tournament.

Five of the current top seven players in the world rankings will be in the field when play gets underway at Scottsdale, with world no.7 Rickie Fowler available to be backed at 14-1.

Australian Marc Leishman has been backed in to 28-1, and Alex Noren, last week’s runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open, is on offer at 33-1 to go one better this week.

At 50-1, 2016 Ryder Cup hero Patrick Reed represents an attractive proposition for punters, as does fans’ favourite Bubba Watson at 80s.

TPC Scottsdale is a 7,261-yard, par-71 course which is certain to challenge the world’s elite over the weekend. The Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designed course underwent a $12 million facelift four years ago and is in excellent condition.
