The Money Being Poured into the Irish Ryder Cup in 2027

After 21 years, the Ryder Cup is finally coming back to Ireland. The tournament, expected to cost the state €58 million, will welcome high-profile players from Europe and the United States, attracting golf enthusiasts worldwide.

When Ireland successfully hosted the Ryder Cup at the K-Club back in 2006, it set a high standard as a host nation. Now that it’s renowned as a top destination for golf and other major sporting events, how will this funding help Ireland live up to its golfing reputation?

Funding for the 2027 Ryder Cup

The €58 million will be spread across a licence fee payment, marketing, and funding for other events such as the Irish Open Legends, the Challenge Tour, and Legends Tour. Here is a further breakdown of the estimated costs:

  • €22.5 million license fee, split into instalments, starting with €3.2 million in 2020 and €2.755m in 2021.
  • €8m on marketing through and with the European Tour, featuring promotions for Adare Manor and Ryder Cup 2027 tickets.
  • The rest will likely be expenses relating to infrastructure upgrades, logistics, security, and various operational costs.

Additional spending on the Adare bypass and Shannon Airport will ease the travel experience to the event for both tourists and locals alike. The 7km bypass will cost €150m and will remove congestion and manage traffic to improve access to Adare Manor. The government hopes that this investment will reduce 80% of the traffic that passes through the village in time for the Ryder Cup in 2027.

As for Shannon Airport, the €11.6m provided under the Regional State Airports Programme 2021 will allow for more visitors to arrive from the United States and Europe. Neither the costs of road improvement nor airport infrastructure development are included in the €58 million.

Betting on the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup’s match play format sees teams from Europe and the US going head-to-head in a series of matches over three days. Unlike regular golf-tournaments, the Ryder Cup is a team event featuring foursomes, fourballs, and singles, each offering different betting possibilities. Being in Ireland this time, Irish bettors are sure to take a keen interest, with both local betting and betting odds offered via sites like Topbettingsites.ie While it’s too early to pick favourites for betting, expect Irish stars like Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry to feature.

Bettors will find opportunities to bet on individual matches, overall results, and even specific aspects like hole-in-ones or birdie rates. Traditional bets include predicting the overall winner of the tournament – whether Europe or the United States will lift the trophy. As the most prestigious event in the golfing calendar, the Ryder Cup 2027 will be a major highlight for sports bettors.

Where will the 2027 Ryder Cup be Hosted?

The venue, Adare Manor, owned by billionaire JP McManus, is sure to charm tourists with its luxurious surroundings and stunning golf course. One of only three golf courses in the UK and Ireland that benefits from a SubAir System under all 18 greens, there just couldn’t be a better choice than this spectacular resort. The course has been completely redesigned by golf course architect, Tom Fazio. In his own words, it “looks and plays like no other course in Ireland”.

However, to some, namely Spanish golfer Jon Rahm, the course is too “Americanized”. “For a European possibly [to win] in that Ryder Cup, they might need to spend a lot of time and resources on de-Americanizing the golf course,” Rahm said.

“We will have the Irish crowd, core of the crowd being Irish, supporting the European team,” he added, “and we all know how the Irish can create a good atmosphere and a good time, and it will be really, really fun.”

Above all, the Ryder Cup demands the highest standards in terms of course quality and spectator facilities. Despite being a luxury resort, it has required various upgrades to accommodate the Ryder Cup. Whether these improvements will play into the Americans’ favour remains to be seen. The costs of hosting the event at Adare Manor have not been disclosed to the public, but these extensive preparations are a sure sign of exciting things to come in 2027.

Local Economic Impact

According to a Deloitte report commissioned by Fáilte Ireland and Ryder Cup Europe, the total economic benefit of the 2006 Ryder Cup was €143 million. How will the 2027 Ryder Cup compare?

This time around, the event is expected to generate at least €100 million in benefits to the economy. The Ryder Cup is an opportunity for a huge tourism boost, which is why the funding has earned approval by Catherine Martin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

The Ryder Cup attracts some of the biggest players out there from Tiger Woods to Rory McIlroy. Excited yet?
