The day was an opportunity for Crowborough Beacon to showcase its course, which is currently ranked 68th in England by Golf World magazine. Founded in 1895, the dramatic heathland setting has some wonderful views towards the South Downs.

The winners of the Harvey’s Tankard with 109 points was Bedfordshire, whose team comprised Richard Kensall, Richard Bushell, John Julian and Colin Webb, with West Kent’s team of Stephen Bonner, John Marshall, Colin Moore and Allister Andrew taking second with 107 points. Just a point further back in third was Wrotham Heath’s team of Steve Eames, Nick Burden, Roger Cross and Peter Fortune.

The prizes, which were generously provided by Harvey’s Brewery and some major golf equipment brands, were presented by the club captain Richard Hemsley. Harvey’s also sponsored a hole-in-one competition on the 6th hole to win a year’s supply of beer. Despite some close efforts, the prize sadly went unclaimed. However, nearest-the-pin prizes were won by David Lewis (Bansted Downs), Clive Voller (Mid Sussex), John Marshall (West Kent), Michael Hurley (Mid Sussex) and Allister Andrew (Crowborough Beacon).

The club hopes the event will now become an annual fixture in the Crowborough Beacon calendar. For more details on the course and visitor green fees, visit www.cbgc.co.uk.
