US Open champion Gary Woodland used clubs from four different golf brands to win his first major title.
Woodland signed for Wilson Golf as a staff player in January this year, following a spell without a major equipment sponsor, and he trusted in a set of Wilson Staff Model Blades (4-PW) and a Wilson Staff prototype 18° driving iron to shoot four rounds in the 60s around Pebble Beach Golf Links to win his first major title.
The 35-year-old from Kansas a peerless display of exceptional iron shots off the tee and the fairway last weekend to find 52 of 72 greens in regulation.
Since he began playing with Wilson irons in January, Woodland has recorded one victory, two seconds and eight top-10 finishes, while taking his prize money to more than $5.5m.
The Wilson Staff Model Blade irons featured as he made a hole-in-one at the QBE Shootout in the Bahamas and just three weeks later, at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, he led the field in Greens in Regulation with an impressive 87.5% for the week. Over the Pebble Beach links, the 35-year-old from Kansas used a full set of the Wilson Staff Model Blades (3-PW), with KBS Tour C-Taper 130 X shafts. He also wore a Wilson Staff Conform Glove and Flat Brim cap sporting the new Wilson logo.
“To win my first major in the US Open at Pebble Beach is an unbelievable feeling,” said Woodland. “This course is so tough. You need every edge possible to play your best, and with partners like Wilson and their Staff irons, I felt completely confident that I could make the shots I needed in crucial situations.”
“What Gary has accomplished is remarkable and we could not be more excited for him and his family,” said Wilson Golf President Tim Clarke. “He has the heart and values of the Wilson brand and a competitive nature and determination to win. He’s a fighter and that fight has brought him to victory here.”
Also in Woodland’s bag was a Ping G410 driver – which he currently averages 309 yards off the tee with – and a Ping G410 3-wood LST. He uses a mixed set of wedges, with Titleist Vokey Design SM7s in 53 and 58 degrees, and a 64-degree TaylorMade Milled Grind Hi-Toe.
Woodland completed his bag with a Newport-style Scotty Cameron putter and the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball, which he switched to from a Bridgestone ball at this year’s Masters Tournament.
