In response to record levels of advance ticket sales for this month’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the European Tour has increased capacity in two of its most popular grandstands.
Advance sales for the tournament are the highest they have ever been, with pre-booked seats in the 18th grandstand up 40% on last year. As a result, the Tour has added 475 extra seats in the 18th green amphitheatre for this year’s championship, taking its overall capacity up to over 2,500.
Despite the extra seating, spaces in the 18th grandstand quickly sold out for the Saturday and Sunday of the tournament. However, the tournament’s organisers have reacted to the unprecedented levels of demand by releasing an additional 250 seats.
Capacity in the first tee grandstand, which provides spectators with a spectacular view of the clubhouse and first fairway, has also been increased by 100 seats.
Defending BMW PGA champion Rory McIlroy, the in-form Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald, are just several of golf’s superstars confirmed to play in this year’s championship, which tees off on May 21.
The four-day tournament is preceded by a Pro-Celeb tournament on May 20, which sees McIlroy playing alongside One Direction star Niall Horan, who recently caddied for the world No.1 at the Masters, in a four ball that will also include former England and Manchester United aces Phil Neville and Paul Scholes.
