RYDER CUP CAPTAINS SET FOR SUNNINGDALE SHOWDOWN

The 2015 Senior Open Championship, which returns to Sunningdale Golf Club in July, will have four victorious Ryder Cup captains in the field.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer will line up alongside Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance on the Berkshire club’s Old Course from July 23-26.

Bernhard Langer will be the defending his Senior Open title at Sunningdale in July

Langer, who could become the first player to retain the title in 15 years, said: “It’s one of the all-time great courses. It’s a wonderful heathland course and it’s always in great condition. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like Sunningdale.”

Montgomerie, last year’s runner-up, said: “I’ve always said it’s a gorgeous place to be, not just for playing golf but to just walk around. It will be a great success.”

Torrance, who is a long-standing member at Sunningdale, is hoping experience will help him better a fifth place finish in 2009, the last time the venue hosted the Senior Open. “I love the golf course,” he said. “I’ve been there for the last 44 years, I was assistant pro there in 1971, so there’s not a blade of grass that I’m not familiar with. It’s obviously our biggest tournament of the year and the best field by a mile with all the Americans who come over and play, so it’ll be fantastic.”

The Senior Open Championship was last held at Sunningdale in 2009, when American Loren Roberts came through a play-off to win.
