Following the cancellation of the 2020 Open Championship, there will be only three major championships scheduled to take part this year, with new dates for the Masters, US PGA Championship and US Open having been announced today [April 6].
The Masters has been given a new date for the week beginning November 9, while the US Open, which was originally set to be played at Winged Foot GC, New York from June 18-21, has been given a new date of September 17-20.
The PGA Championship, previously scheduled for May 14-17 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, will now be played from August 6-9 at the same venue, subject to all Coronavirus restrictions having been lifted at that time.Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said: “We want to emphasise that our future plans are encumbent upon favourable counsel and direction from health officials. Provided that occurs and we can conduct the 2020 Masters, we intend to invite those professionals and amateurs who would have qualified for our original April date and welcome all existing ticket holders to enjoy the excitement of Masters week.”
The 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, is to remain in its original date of September 25-27, which means the first day’s matches will be held just five days after the conclusion of the rescheduled US Open.
The women’s professional game has also shuffled its major schedule, with the LPGA Tour moving the ANA Inspiration to the week beginning September 7 at Mission Hills Country Club in California, and the US Women’s Open moving to the week of December 7 at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas. The AIG Women’s British Open is currently staying in its scheduled slot at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland from August 20-23.
