Colin Montgomerie won the Invesco QQQ Championship after beating Bernhard Langer in a play-off at Sherwood Country Club in California.
The 56-year-old Scot captured his seventh Champions Tour title after the winning the first extra hole with a par, while Langer endured a nightmare in a greenside bunker, taking four shots to get out of the hazard after finding a terrible lie.
Montgomerie, playing five groups ahead of Langer, birdied four of the first five holes, and then chipped in for birdie on 10, made an eagle on 11, and also birdied 16 and 18, holing out from 40 feet at the last for a nine-under 63 and a 15-under total. Langer parred the last four holes for a closing 67 to send the tournament to a play-off.
Montgomerie said: “The birdie at the last was a massive bonus, but the eagle at 11 was key. I’m suddenly leading. From third, fourth, suddenly, boom, I’m leading now. So, there’s a whole different feeling.”
Speaking about Langer’s uncharacteristic slip up in the play-off, he added: “How often does that happen with Bernhard? I felt for him in that bunker – I really did. It was a horrible downhill lie with a big lip to get over.”
