Carswell Golf & Country Club in Oxfordshire shut down last week after its owners pulled the plug on the loss-making venue, which first opened in 1993.
Visitors to the club at the end of September were greeted with a sign that said the private members club would ‘re-open as a pay-and-play venue’, but that is no longer an option, and the club has now closed for good.
In an email to the club captain Kevin Howe, club director Geri Lisi explained that the club was no longer financially viable and that all staff had been dismissed and that the company was working with liquidators to settle terms with outstanding creditors.
Howe said: “As captain and a long-time member with many friends at Carswell, I am gutted that our friendly clubhouse and loyal members will no longer play there, but we move on. I know some members intend to form Carswell Nomads and play at different courses through the winter, while others clubs in the area, including Witney, Drayton, Shrivenham and Bicester, have been in touch to offer good rates to play their courses.”
