Burhill Golf Club in Surrey has been chosen to host Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship for the next five years.
Burhill’s 6,957-yard New Course joins a plethora of five-star venues, including Frilford Heath, Little Aston, Panmure and Fairhaven, as one of 13 Regional Qualifying venues around the UK and will play host until 2020.
Since opening in 2001, the New Course’s undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and meandering water hazards, have presented elite players with a stern test in Senior Open Qualifying and on the EuroPro Tour.
With the 2016 qualifier set to be held on June 20, professionals and amateurs with a handicap of scratch or better will vie to make it through to Final Qualifying, with the ultimate goal of teeing it up at The Open at Royal Troon in July.
Matthew Hazelden, general manager at Burhill, who played in the last Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2004, commented: “It’s a real honour to have been selected as one of the thirteen UK Regional Qualifying venues and speaks volumes about the regard in which Burhill is held among the golf community. The New Course will provide a real examination for both professionals and top amateurs alike, and we look forward to showcasing the exceptional facilities on offer here at Burhill.”
