Last year, all four majors provided some riveting golfing action. But which players came out on top?

Masters – Scottie Scheffler

The first major of the year was won by Scottie Scheffler. The young American held off a late charge from Rory McIlroy — who shot a final day 64 — to claim the green jacket by just three strokes. Online bookmakers which provide golf betting have backed the beaten McIlroy to bounce back in 2023 though, and he is the favourite to claim the green jacket in April. Should he accomplish the feat, it would be his first-ever success at Augusta.

Scheffler will be doing his utmost to retain his crown in 2023 though, not least because of the $2.7m prize fund he took home with him last April. Should he be able to retain the green jacket, he would become the first player since Tiger Woods two decades ago to win back-to-back at Augusta.

PGA Championship – Justin Thomas

At last year’s PGA Championship, American Justin Thomas took advantage of last-day collapses from Mito Pereira and Will Zalatoris to seal his first major victory as well access to global streaming services. Pereira entered the final day round with nine under par and with a three-shot lead. A disastrous round from the Chilean saw him finish five over par, allowing Thomas to sneak through, shooting a final day 67 for the victory.

US Open – Matt Fitzpatrick

At last year’s US Open, Matt Fitzpatrick became the first English major winner in six years when he held off the late-charging Scottie Scheffler to seal the victory. Heading into the final day, the Englishman was tied for the lead with Will Zalatoris on four under par. Scheffler was two strokes behind.

Fitzpatrick held his nerve in a tense final round, finishing -2 for the day, one stroke clear of Scheffler. The 28-year-old from Sheffield, Yorkshire, claimed a cool $3.15m for his troubles.

The Open – Cameron Smith

The final major of the year was claimed by Australian Cameron Smith. He shot an incredible 20 under par at St. Andrews to claim The Open Championship, finishing one stroke clear of American Cameron Young, with Rory McIlroy a further stroke behind. The Aussie returned to Brisbane with the Claret Jug in tow, as well as a cheque for $2.5m.
