Overview of Golf

Major Golf Tournaments

The men’s major golf championships, commonly referred to as major championships or the majors, are the four prestigious professional tournaments in golf. They are:

 

  • Masters Tournament: an invitational hosted by the Augusta National Golf Club. It’s played in the U.S.
  • PGA Championship: It is hosted by the Professional Golfer’s Association of America.
  • US Open: The US Open is hosted by the United States Golf Association (USGA).
  • The Open Championship: It is hosted by the R&A and is played on a links course.

The Masters Golf Tournament

The Masters Tournament, simply referred to as US Master or the Masters, is the first of the men’s major golf tournaments to occur in the year. It usually takes place by the first week of April, with the final to take place on the second Sunday of the month (N.B. There have been some exceptions). The Total Prize pool is $15,000,000 as of 2023.

Format

The masters consist of four rounds at 18 holes each. The four rounds are played from Thursday to Sunday, with 2023 scheduled from Thursday, April 6 to Sunday, April 9. The number of participants is relatively low compared to other majors, so the competitors play in groups of three for the first two rounds.

 

The location of the Masters never changes as it is always played at Augusta National Golf Club, a privately owned club, a private course. It is the only major tournament hosted by a private club.

 

The sudden-death playoff is employed in case of a tie after the fourth round.

Traditions and Award

One of the pioneering traditions in the masters is the green jacket. The competition winner is awarded a green jacket which must be returned to the clubhouse one year later. The green jacket remains his personal property and is kept in a special room. A green jacket was once found at a thrift shop and was auctioned for $139,000! If a golfer wins the event multiple times, the same green jacket is awarded to the player.

 

The Champions Dinner, which was started in 1952 by Ben Hogan, is held on the Tuesday before the tournament starts. Only past tournament winners and certain board members of the Augusta National Golf Club can be present.

 

Since 1963, legendary golfers who are usually past winners of the masters tournament hit an honorary tee shot on the opening round to open the tournament.

 

The prize pool of the tournament is ever-growing. The prize pool of the 2021 masters tournament was $11,500,000 and with the winner eventually going home with $2,070,000.

Records

Jack Nicklaus holds the record for the most masters wins with six. He also holds the record as the oldest player to win a master tournament when he won the 1986 edition of the tournament at 46 years and 82 days. He has also made the most top ten with 22.

 

Tiger Woods is the youngest winner of the masters. He won the 1997 edition at 21 years, 104 days.

 

In 2013, Guan Tianlang became the youngest player to participate in a masters tournament at 14 years and 168 days.
