Former world number one Jordan Spieth won the Texas Open by two shots to end a winless streak that stretched back to his victory at the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 2017.
The 27 year old American hit seven birdies in a final round 66 to finish on 18 under and beat playing partner Charley Hoffman by two strokes.
“It’s been a long road,” said Spieth, who has now won 12 PGA Tour titles. “I never really doubted myself that I’d get back to where I wanted to go but when you lose confidence, a lot of times it’s hard to see the positives going forward, and I just kept my head down.”
The win comes after several near misses this year, with Spieth having led after three rounds at both the Phoenix Open and Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February.
Spieth was tied for the lead before Sunday’s final round with England’s Matt Wallace, who finished four shots back in third. Hoffman had cut Spieth’s lead to one shot, but he birdied the 17th hole at TPC San Antonio to restore his advantage.
Wallace, seeking his first PGA Tour victory, had matched Spieth’s birdie at the second before a wayward drive cost him a bogey at the fourth. His putter then let him down as he missed a host of birdie chances during a frustrating run of 11 successive pars before he birdied the par-3 16th after firing his tee shot to within seven feet. He followed that up with another birdie at the 17th before making a par at the last to finish four behind Spieth on 14 under after carding a 70.
