Nelly Korda powers to third successive win

Nelly Korda continued her dominant form when recording her third consecutive LPGA Tour victory at the Ford Championship in Phoenix, Arizona.

World No.1 Korda started the final round at Seville Golf and Country Club two shots off the lead, and closed with two birdies in her final three holes to shoot a 65 and set the clubhouse target on 20 under.

Australian rookie Hira Naveed (66) finished second on 18 under, while Lexi Thompson’s challenge ended in the water on the 16th as she faded to third, alongside European Solheim Cup players Carlota Ciganda and Maya Stark.

The 25-year-old’s success at in Arizona made her the first LPGA Tour player to win three tournaments in a row  since Ariya Jutanugarn in 2016 and the first American since Nancy Lopez won five on the bounce in 1978. Annika Sorenstam also won five consecutive events in 2004-05.

“I knew I had to shoot a low one and I played some smart golf,” said Korda. “It’s hard mentally to stay 100% the week after a win, but to win three on the trot is a dream.”
