Paul Lawrie will continue his maiden season on the Staysure Tour when he makes his Staysure PGA Seniors Championship debut at London Golf Club from August 1-4.
The 1999 Open champion turned 50 at the beginning of 2019 and continues his inaugural campaign on the over-50s circuit by teeing it up at one of the biggest events of the season.
For the second successive year, London Golf Club hosts the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship with a £400,000 prize fund – the highest tiered prize fund outside of the senior major championships – to battle for.
Following his Senior Open debut the week beforehand, the Scot will return to London Golf Club for the first time since the Kent club hosted the 2009 European Open.
“I’m looking forward to another fun and challenging week on the Staysure Tour,” said Lawrie. “The quality of golf on the over-50s circuit is very high and the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is a title which will be hard fought for. It has been over a decade since I played at London Golf Club and I’m looking forward to returning and enjoying the test on the International Course.”
The Staysure PGA Seniors Championship made its comeback on the Staysure Tour International Schedule last year as Philip Golding sealed his fifth over-50s victory with a final round of 63 at London Golf Club. Andrew Oldcorn was the last Scot to lift the trophy in 2011, after compatriot Sam Torrance won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, while Bill Longmuir became the first Scottish winner of the Staysure Tour event in 2003.
“There have been several iconic winners of this event, so naturally it would be an honour to join the list of great names who have lifted the trophy,” Lawrie added.
With Lawrie confirmed, Staysure Chairman Ryan Howsam is looking forward to watching him play and seeing more Staysure Tour stars tee it up in August.
“Paul is one of the great Scottish names of European golf and to have him playing the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is very exciting for the event, the Tour, and the fans, who will be treated to four days of exciting golf in Kent. Paul’s inclusion is a sign of the stellar field, which is forming for this year’s event, and hopefully, there will be another Major addition before August comes around.”
