Hideki Matsuyama won the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational after an incredible fightback in the final round in California.
The 31-year-old Japanese players’s nine-under 62 to secure victory was one shot behind of the course record at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
Matsuyama started the final day six shots behind leader Patrick Cantlay, but finished on 17 under par to claim his ninth PGA Tour title.
Cantlay, who had a five-shot lead after 36 holes, shot a closing one-over-par 72 to finish fourth on -13, with Will Zalatoris and Luke List sharing second on -14 after shooting rounds of 69 and 68 respectively. Cantlay later revealed that he hadn’t felt well during the final round and woke up with a high temperature.
The American trio were stunned by Matsuyama, who started the day with three birdies and added six more in the back nine to secure his first PGA Tour victory since the Sony Open just over two years ago.
“I wasn’t striking the ball really well, but my chipping and putting was working a lot this week,” said Matsuyama. “It’s really important for me to keep this momentum, especially going to Augusta.”
Zalatoris and List both finished with -14, while Cantlay was tied for fourth on -13 with Xander Schauffele and Adam Hadwin.
Tommy Fleetwood finished in a five-way tie for 10th after closing with a 67, while world number two Rory McIlroy finished in joint 24th with a final round 70.
